  15. 0) WHAT FAXHAVEN IS
  16. ============================================================================
  17. One-Step FAXHAVEN is a complete application for sending, receiving and
  18. processing Group 3 FAXes with your PC. It is DOS-based and Function-key driven.
  19. There are no special hardware requirements for FAXHAVEN other than a FAX modem.
  20.  
  21. FAXHAVEN includes the stand-alone product One-Step High Quality FAX (HQ-FAX),
  22. for building and sending letter-quality FAXes.
  23.

  25. 1) INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
  26. ============================================================================
  27. As you are reading this Readme file, it is assumed that you have trans-
  28. ferred the complete umcompressed FAXHAVEN package to a diskette. It is NOT
  29. necessary to do so.  If you have downloaded the FAXHAVEN.zip file and unzipped
  30. it into a temporary directory, the installation procedure works ok, from
  31. your C: drive.
  32.  
  33. 1)   Mount the installation diskette into drive A: or B:
  34.  
  35. 2)   Enter A: or B: Make sure that the DOS prompt  changes  from
  36.      C:> to A:>, or from C:> to B:>. This is very important!
  37.  
  38. 3)   Enter "Install".  If you wish the package to install itself on any
  39.      other than C:\FAXHAVEN, enter the full pathname in the Install command.
  40.          Example (1): "Install D:\Faxhaven",
  41.          Example (2): "Install C:\FAXworks"
  42.  
  43. Now you can watch FAXHAVEN install itself. It will only take a minute.
  44. This install procedure will NOT update your Autoexec.bat file. It will
  45. place a customized "FH.bat" file in the root directory, drive C:, so
  46. that it will change to the C:\FAXHAVEN directory (or the directory that
  47. you specified) when starting FAXHAVEN.

  50. 2) FIRST TIME USE
  51. =======================================================================
  52. We strongly recommend to new users of FAXHAVEN that the following procedure be
  53. followed to get acquainted with the product. It is assumed that you have a
  54. functioning FAX modem when you are ready to excercise FAXHAVEN.  If not, you
  55. may follow these instructions to get the feel of FAXHAVEN, but you will not be
  56. able to receive and/or process FAXes.
  57.  
  58. A) First, print out this file "Readme.fh" if you have not already done so and
  59.    have it handy.
  60.  
  61. B) Next, let's view some TIFF files, even if they aren't FAXes.
  62.    1) Enter "FH" at the DOS prompt.  The FAXHAVEN main menu will appear.
  63.    2) Enter <F5>. The Receive Processing screen will appear.
  64.    3) Use the <TAB> key to position the cursor to the File Ext. field.
  65.       Enter "TIF".
  66.    4) Enter <F2>.  All of the TIFF files in the FAXHAVEN directory will be
  67.                   listed on the screen.
  68.    5) Enter <shift><F2>.  All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
  69.                   selected for processing.
  70.    6) Enter <F5> again. The View Processsing screen will appear. The selected
  71.                   TIFF files will be listed here and pre-selected.
  72.    7) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
  73.                   Observe that the Function keys are described first, and then
  74.                   the user input fields are described.
  75.    8) Enter <F5> again. Each TIFF file will be displayed in turn. Study the
  76.                   information on the screen before the image is displayed to
  77.                   learn how to navigate through the image.
  78.    When you have viewed all of the images the View Processing scrn reappears.
  79.    9) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.

  81. C) Next, let's print some TIFF sample files, even if they aren't FAXes.
  82.    This will only work if you have an HP Laserjet printer as LPT1. If you don't
  83.    have such a printer as LPT1, skip this step. Later when you learn how to
  84.    modify your FAXHAVEN configuration, you can return to this step.
  85.    1) Enter <shift><F2>.  All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
  86.                   selected.
  87.    2) Enter <F6>. The Print Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
  88.                  files will be listed here and pre-selected.
  89.    3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
  90.    4) Enter <F6> again. Each TIFF file will be printed in turn. This will take
  91.                  a few of minutes.  When FAXHAVEN has printed all of the image
  92.                  files a status message indicates that printing is complete.
  93.    5) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.

  95. D) Next, let's convert some sample TIFF files to another image format.
  96.    1) Enter <shift><F2>.  All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
  97.                  selected.
  98.    2) Enter <F8>. The Convert Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
  99.                  files will be listed here and pre-selected.
  100.    3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
  101.    4) Enter <F8> again. Each TIFF file will be converted to a PCX file.  This
  102.                  will take a couple of minutes.  When FAXHAVEN has converted
  103.                  all of the image files a status message indicates that
  104.                  conversion is complete.
  105.    5) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.

  107. E) Next, let's archive some sample TIFF files.
  108.    ATTENTION!! Archiving is only available to registered users.
  109.    1) Enter <shift><F2>.  All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
  110.                 selected.
  111.    2) Enter <F9>. The Archive Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
  112.                 files will be listed here and pre-selected.  Observe that "FHA"
  113.                 (FaxHaven Archive) is the output format.
  114.    3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
  115.    Enter <F9> again. Each TIFF file will be converted to a FHA file.  This will
  116.                 take a couple of minutes.  When FAXHAVEN has archived all of
  117.                 the image files a status message indicates that archiving is
  118.                 complete.
  119.    4) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.

  121. F) Next, let's modify the FAXHAVEN configuration.
  122.    1) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Main Menu screen.
  123.    2) Enter <F2>.  The FAXHAVEN Configuration screen will appear.
  124.    3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
  125.                 Observe that the Function keys are described first, and then
  126.                 the user input fields are described.
  127.    The default configuration will appear. Here you can customize your
  128.               configuration to suit your needs. You can move the cursor from
  129.               field to field with the <TAB> key.
  130.               If you have an higher class of video monitor than EGA, you may
  131.               enter this information in the video type field. You may enter
  132.               'VGA', 'SVGA', or 'HIGH', for VGA, Super VGA or high resolution.
  133.               If you don't have an HP Laserjet printer on LPT1, you may
  134.               change the print format field.  Study the help information to
  135.               determine what to enter to identify your printer.
  136.               You are now ready to try step 'C' above, if you skipped it.
  137.               You should decide where you wish to store converted FAXes, what
  138.               format they will most often be converted to, and where you wish
  139.               your archived FAXes to be stored.  You do not need to make any
  140.               changes to these fields. You may do so later if
